Der niederländische Historiker Johan Huizinga hat 1938 in seinem Buch »Homo Ludens« for- muliert: »Ich behaupte nicht, dass die Kultur aus dem Spiel hervorgeht, sondern dass sie in dem Spiel wächst, und außerdem dass sie in manchen Fällen ihren Spielcharakter bewahrt, wo man es nicht erwartet oder sich bewusst ist, kurz wie öfters Spiel und Ernst in der Kultur untrennbar sind oder ineinander übergehen.«
Für eine lebendige Demokratie – eine, die sich was traut – brauchen wir eine lebendige, verrückte Kultur. Einen spielerischer Ansatz, der in viele Richtungen weist. Die kurze Form kann vieles davon übernehmen. Der Kurzfilm ist das Format, in dem vieles ausprobiert wer- den kann und auch ausprobiert wird. Es wird einfach gemacht. Die kurze Form fasst und trägt das Neue in sich. Keine Nischenkunst ist die kurze Form, sondern wichtiger Impulsgeber für die Gesellschaft.

In 1938, the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga wrote in his book »Homo Ludens«: »I’m not claiming that culture emerges from playing, but that it grows in playing and furthermore that it retains its playful character in some cases where you wouldn’t expect it or where you aren’t conscious of it. In short, playfulness and earnestness are inseparable in culture and they per- meate each other.« A spirited and courageous democracy needs a feisty and crazy culture. A playful approach pointing towards many directions. The short forms can fulfil all those tasks. In this format, experiments are not only possible but also frequently performed. It just gets done. The short form grasps and contains the new. The short form isn’t a niche art but an important initiator for society.
The Kurzfilm Festival’s Hamburg heart lies in its three big competitions. The International Competition with contemporary films by artists from all over the world, the German Compe- tition with a multitude of independently produced films from film universities and art acade- mies alongside free productions and the festival’s longest standing competition, the Three Minute Quickie, which had been born out of a whim. 32 years ago, it had become clear after one particular gruesome screening session that it can’t go on like that. Many of the films were neither pointed, funny nor grotesque and often simply way too long. In the following year this led to the call for entries for the first Three-Minute Quickie on the subject »Hole«.
